The Szwarc Memorial Trust

The Daniel and Joshua Szwarc Memorial Trust was established by the Victorian Children’s Aid Society in 1986 following the death of Joshua in September 1984 and Daniel in October 1985.

At the time of their deaths, the children were in the care of the Victorian Children’s Aid Society as both were born with a rare degenerative condition known as “Canavans Disease”.  The fatal disease retards normal infant development resulting in failure in motor development, gradual blindness and total debilitation.

The Trust was transferred to ForCHILDREN (Australia) Inc in 2000 with the objective to improve the quality of care for children with disabilities by promoting research and education.

It is planned that an Annual Oration for the  Daniel and Joshua Szwarc Memorial Trust  will be a feature of the Trust’s program in the years ahead.  ForChildren will be assisting in the planning of this event, and further details will be posted on this site in due course.

Donations to the Trust are welcomed and are tax deductible.  Cheques and Credit Card donations should be made payable to ForChildren – Szwarc Trust.

OzChild –Children Australia Inc

In mid 2009, ForCHILDREN (Australia) Inc formed a strategic alliance with OzChild to work together on four projects:

  • Establishing an OzChild ‘Chances to Shine’ program;
  • Planning a Disability Conference for late 2010;
  • A joint proposal by ForCHILDREN (Australia) Inc and OzChild has been submitted to the International Forum for Child Welfare to host the Annual Forum in Melbourne in 2012. This proposal will be considered by the IFCW at their Annual Forum in Jakarta in October 2009;
  • The Children's Hour - a major fundraising project;

OzChild is an independent, non-government organisation with a history of helping children and their families which dates back to 1851. Throughout this history OzChild’s commitment has always been to provide better opportunities for children and young people and to improve the quality of their care, life opportunities and status. Whilst the safety and well-being of children is its highest priority, OzChild recognises that children can be disadvantaged in many ways. For some it is due to constant factors such as poverty, poor parenting or dysfunctional home environments. For others, it is a consequence of changes to the way we live.

The services provided by OzChild are multi-disciplinary and broad in scope, reflecting a concern to address issues across the various contexts that impact on children and young people’s lives. OzChild also provides quality training for people working with children.

Today OzChild helps:
Children who can’t live at home because it isn’t safe
Children who have suffered abuse in some way
Children who have learning difficulties
Children with mental health issues
Children with a disability and their families
Indigenous children whose health and wellbeing is at risk
Young people who have been failed by the education system
Families who are struggling in their everyday lives.

OzChild’s commitment is to protect and build better futures for Australian children and it believes that ‘every child deserves the chance to shine’.
